Golf has always been a highly misunderstood game. Those who have never played it tend to say it’s a boring game where players just lazily walk around from one space to the other, putting the ball. Some feel it’s just too expensive a game, while others feel it takes too long to learn. The truth is that these are nothing but myths and today we are going to bust some of the common ones.
Myth #1 Golf can take all day to play
The fact is that there are a number of ways to play the game and it can be tweaked to fit into your busy lifestyle. It’s common for people to indulge in leisure activities such as playing tennis, heading for the gym, dining out or going to the movies; all of which would take up at least a couple of hours. While an average round of golf (which includes 18 holes), takes 4 hours, you can easily play only 9 holes which will take up only half that time. It’s something you would be able to fit in after work or on weekends too.
Myth #2 Golf is nothing but a stuffy old game
It’s true that there was a time when only a certain section of society and set of people played this game; however, all that is fast undergoing a change – what with a slew of new players making an entry into the space. There are new formats and new locations and it’s no longer a jacket, tie and tweeds affair that it used to be, up until a decade ago. Current day golf clubs are very different and they have various memberships to meet the requirements of people from different lifestyles.
Myth #3 Golf is exclusively a men’s game
This one could be no further from the truth – this game is for everyone and people with different abilities and skill levels are able to compete and play together. Today there are a number of great women players and it’s an excellent game for men and women.
Myth #4 Golf is a very expensive game
This game doesn’t have to be expensive. Just like in any other game or sport, you have the option to spend exactly as much as you like. You will find there are a variety of equipment, playing options as well as clothing to fit every pocket.
Myth #5 You would have to invest in a set of golf clubs just to get started
This is incorrect. Many clubs offer beginners memberships where the equipment is provided as part of membership charges (which incidentally, are very low). This gives you the opportunity to start learning to play the game at a reasonable cost (without having to invest in equipment). It also gives you the chance to figure out whether you really enjoy playing the game and would like to pursue it. Many golf clubs also rent you a complete set of clubs if you don’t have your own. Check out some tips here for signs that you are using the wrong golf club.
Myth #6 Golf can’t really help you stay fit
Golf involves a significant amount of walking, bending etc. This helps keep you active and many people also find that when they start playing golf on a regular basis, they end up losing weight. In fact it can help reduce cholesterol levels and help you live a healthier life. In an average golf game, you may end up walking for around 7 km, which can help you burn up to 900 calories.
As you can see, some of these assumptions about golf are nothing but myths. The fact is it’s an enjoyable, refreshing and interesting game that is also quite easy to learn.
